Liz met Alex's father when she was leaving from her latest courtroom conquest. She was a defence attorney. When she was leaving, he approached her and asked her for a coffee date. What was a simple Coffee date turned into a full blown affair. When Liz told him she was pregnant, he revealed himself to be Zeus, King of the gods. Since she was pregnant he had to leave but left their child with a gift for his 13th birthday. When he was born, Alex was born with a sharp gaze. When he was five, his mother took him camping. While he slept, a snake crawled into his sleeping bag. When his mother checked on him, she was surprised to see he had strangled it to death. His mother rarely took him camping after that. When he turned seven, he was taken to his grandparents farm for the weekend. When he was tending to the pigs, a great boar charged him. He saw that it was breathing fire. He led it away from the farm and led it to a cliff. Right when it charged, he ducked out of the way and it tumbled off a cliff.
When he was thirteen, his social studies teacher, Mr. Lerman, visited him and his mother right when they were celebrating his birthday. When his mother passed him his father gift, he opened it and saw that it was a bronze laser pointer. When he pressed the button it transformed into a spear with a bronze head. Mr.Lerman commented how it was fitting for him as a demigod. When Alex asked what he meant, Mr. Lerman revealed himself to be a demigod, the son of Athena. He didn't know what he meant when his mother told him his father was a god as well. Meanwhile, outside, a rather large group of pigeons had gathered near his house and when Alex and Mr. Lerman had walked outside, he noticed the flock of pigeons had been following him. When Mr.Lerman saw, he pulled out a knife from his coat pocket and told Alex to run. When he asked why he said that they were stymphalian birds. They were worse than piranhas. As the birds dove, Mr. Lerman held them off. Alex remembered reading that they were beaten with bells. Alex withdrew his spear and struck a sharp chord on a metal bench.
As he continued to strike it, he saw that they were acting crazed. When they left, Mr.Lerman told his mother that he was to bring him to Camp Half-Blood. Even though his mother did not want to, she let him go. As they travelled Alex was told about Camp Half-Blood. When they were only a few miles from the camp entrance, the boar from when he was seven returned and charged them down. Alex was able to get out of the way but Mr.Lerman wasn't as lucky. He was charged down and gored by the boar's tusks. As he lay there dying, Alex was consumed by a combination of grief and rage. His rage gathered lightning into his spear. Right as the boar turned to charge him, Alex ran his spear clean through it letting the lightning loose inside the boar. The boar laid there and collapsed into dust. As Mr. Lerman laid there dying, he gave Alex his knife and told him to become a true hero. When Alex passed the gate clouds gathered and lightning erupted around him, marking him as a son of Zeus. Thus Alex and crossed the threshold and entered Camp Half-Blood all, at 13.
