While accompanying her boss on a business trip to New York, Lillianne Mathias caught the eye of a business man who invited her to dinner. Lillianne found herself enraptured with this person. After more than a few drinks, the two made their way to Lillianne's apartment. In the morning, Lillianne was sad to find she had only been a one-night stand. She later found she was pregnant. Lillianne, being a very independent business woman, wasn't very thrilled to suddenly have a child, but figured she could plan around it. Nine months later, her child Atreyu came into her life.
Atreyu was raised in Utah by their mother, Lillianne Mathias, a hardworking business woman. Lillianne often went away for work, and left someone who worked for her (such as an assistant or secretary) to babysit her only child. She was, after all, "too busy with planned life to worry about the unplanned". Atreyu spent several occasions hiding around a local park, scared of some of the babysitters, especially the one with only one eye that babysat for a month when they were 9.(This was a Cyclops, in case that is not clear.) When this happened they hid in trees, under bushes, and generally in the shadows to avoid the frightening nanny. Being so young and unaware of their godly descent, the Cyclops didn't have too much interest in hunting down Atreyu. Lillianne eventually got another babysitter, firing the Cyclops along with anyone else she employed who didn't live up to her work standards, this was an often occurrence.
One day a package arrived addressed to Atreyu, it was plain and unassuming, only about the size of a box of tissues, with no return address. It contained two thick bracelets, both an odd bronze color, and a black necklace. They soon discovered the necklace had magical powers. While being baby sat, they had slipped it on, soon the baby sitter was going frantic looking for the child, even though said child was sitting in a plain corner of the room. After a few minutes of watching the adult tear up the house in search of them, they had burst out laughing this seemed to break whatever spell had been in place. After a few more attempts they had figured out that they had about 12 minutes of concealment as long as they didn't do anything to call attention to themselves, after that the magic necklace needed 3 hours to start working again. The necklace stored shadows and allowed them to be manipulated.
The bracelets had to be magic too, Atreyu figured. They tried to see what they did, but apparently wearing them didn't activate them like it did with the necklace. The arrival of yet another new baby sitter was what showed the real nature of the bracelets.
Ms. Sacala was their mother's personal assistant, when their mother had assigned her to watching over her child, Ms. Sacala agreed happily claiming to love children. Atreyu had been messing with the bracelets when the baby sitter arrived, she was oddly creepy with the toothy grin she kept giving them as she talked to their mother. When their mother had left, Ms.Sacala came up behind Atreyu and asked what they were doing. When they turned around to reply to her they were greeted by the sight of a scythian dracanae.
The dracanae picked the small child up by their underarms, grinning wickedly as they shrieked. In their panic, something seemed to snap into place for Atreyu. They kicked the dracanae just under her ribs, winding her and causing her to drop them. They quickly ran to their room, grabbed the necklace, and put it on. The dracanae soon followed into the room, looking directly at Atreyu. If you asked them, they would tell you their heart had stopped in fear. But she soon turned away, calling out "Here little one, I won't hurt you"s and 'come on out sssmall ones' while sniffing the air.
After quite a few minutes of pure terror, Atreyu realized they were running out of time. They slowly shuffled out of the room, wary of the snake lady's gaze. They had made it to the hall way near the front door of the lofty apartment they lived in. but the magic chose the worst time to run out. The dracanae burst out of the room she'd been in and charged them. They tripped and fell backwards on their butt, the dracanae pouncing upon them. However their wrist grew hot and a sword formed from one of the bracelets, the dracanae impaling herself on it. Atreyu was left covered in a pile of gold dust, which they sat in until they thought of how mad their mother would be at the mess and then began cleaning it up. When their mother got home Atreyu had tried to explain where the baby sitter had gone, but Lillianne didn't seem to remember a Ms.Sacala. She chalked the crazy story her child had told her to be nothing more than an over-active imagination. A few more monster baby sitters came around, but after discovering the shield Atreyu managed to dispose of them.
Back in her high school years, Lillianne promised herself to never send any children of hers through public school, she kept that promise causing Atreyu to be home-schooled until their mother finally gave into the demands that they attend "a real school like other children". Keeping promises was always very important to the family. So in fourth grade they started at a charter school, but after an incident where Atreyu broke several kids bones (they were bullying a friend of Atreyu's), their mother sent them off to a private school.
The private school worked for a few years, though the rumors of what happened in fourth grade kept them from having any close friends. A few monsters attacked here and there, but Atreyu had become accustom to putting them down. But another close call happened after a new teacher arrived in 7th grade. Atreyu could tell the teacher didn't like them from the first week, blaming things on them that they either had nothing to do with or were only marginally involved in, giving out harder assignments more often (particularly writing papers, timed, in class.), and general glaring during class.
One day, the teacher, Ms. Harlow, asked them to stay after class. As soon as they were alone, the teacher grew long fangs, sparse patches of red fur, glowing eyes, a red complexion, and sharp claws, gaining an almost werewolf like appearance. (A Vrykolaka for anyone wondering, it's essentially a greek werewolf-vampire.) Atreyu had forgotten to bring any magical items that day, but managed to get her run over with a car whilst running away. A localized earthquake had caught the monster off gaurd, causing her to fall in the middle of the street.
Atreyu packed up their stuff ran all the way back home, shaken-up from the experience, much to their mother's displeasure. She gave them a non-paying job at the office as an errand runner until the next school year. During this time Atreyu had decided they were trans and not actually a boy, but agendered. Their mother refused to acknowledge this. They had also decided to keep quiet about what had happened with Ms. Harlow. They didn't want their mother to think they were crazy along with all the other problems they felt they had caused her.
Things didn't go very smoothly over the summer either. While out getting coffee for the whole office, they were confronted by a ragged looking homeless lady, who screeched at them and knocked the coffee right out of their hands. When Atreyu got mad at her for it, she grew wings where her arms had been, becoming a harpy. The harpy tried to drag Atreyu somewhere but another localized earthquake stunned her, Atreyu managed to run away, not wanting to pull out a sword in public and kill her in cold blood. Needless to say, their mother quickly got upset at them for failing to bring back the coffee, but at the mention of the homeless lady's attack she softened. Atreyu had wondered how they had stayed standing during both earthquakes. So over the summer they found they had caused the earthquakes and practiced at a large park. Not very many people found the quakes strange because Utah had them all the time anyways.
The next school was a private school for troubled children in Vermont. This worked relatively well aside from a few bullies every year. Atreyu had decided not practice earthquakes, due to Vermont's lack of naturally occurring ones. In 8th grade they had taken a trip to a small natural grain field to study the ecosystems there, whilst there three small green creatures appeared and started to harass Atreyu whenever they got separated from the group. The Karpoi used the wild grain to trip them and cut any exposed skin. The tripping caused Atreyu to become even more separated. When the rest of the class got out of sight the Karpois chose to attack Atreyu directly, but thanks to all the practice they had with their magic weapons, it was more tiresome than anything to defeat the little grain spirits. Though Atreyu got some strange looks when they were found by the class, covered in dirt, mud, shallow cuts, bruises, and cereal.
The straw that broke the camel's back happened in 9th grade, when Atreyu was 15. A girl at the school dance who was known to flirt managed to drag Atreyu behind the school alone. She turned into a fire haired, red eyed, fanged, woman with a metal leg and a donkey leg. (Empousa) When her charms didn't work on the asexual, she attacked Atreyu leaving a nasty scar on their upper arm and one on their side. They had been told that no jewelry could be worn during the dance, so magic weapons were out, leaving Atreyu at the she-demon's mercy. Luckily, the school's Satyr found them quickly and stabbed the empousa while it was distracted with attacking Atreyu.
After much freaking out from Atreyu, and some explaining from the Satyr, the two then fled one state over to New York, and then to camp half blood. Getting to Camp took about 3 days, involving a lot of walking and hiding. At one point they snuck onto a ferry. Other than that it was a very uneventful trip. Atreyu told the satyr not to bother their mother with telling her any of this, they felt it was better to let her think they ran away. This felt like the final push they needed to run away, they felt their mother only ever saw them as an unplanned for burden anyhow. (However true or untrue that thought was.)
