Kang Mi-sook was a dancer who was born and raised in Busan, in South Korea. She met a man, Baek Sung-won, who worked as an accountant. They got married and eventually had a child of their own, little Hae-jin. She was a bright and happy baby, she never really cried or had any tantrums, and her parents thought that she would grow up to be the sweetest little girl.
As time passed, Hae-jin took up her mother's passion in dance and trained hard, spending hours a day practicing. She was happy where she was, and never wanted to leave. As an only child, she was always spoiled and got pretty much everything that she asked for. But, when she was 8, her father got a job offer in San Fransisco. So, her family packed up and left. She and her mother both spoke no English, and they were left clueless while Hae-jin's father tried desperately to keep the family together.
Hae-jin's mother and father started to get into many fights, and eventually her parents separated without divorcing, in case they could ever rekindle their relationship. Hae-jin's mother moved into a house just outside of Boston, where she was pretty far away from Hae-jin's father and she could have a fresh, relaxed, start. Hae-jin missed her mother, as she was her inspiration in dance, and her father became more reserved and cold.
Now not dancing as much, Hae-jin had nothing to dream for and felt almost lost. She started to become more independent from her father, trying to distance herself as much as possible from him as a child could. As she reached the age of 12, she got into partying. Even though she was young, she started to hold her own parties when her father was out of town, not caring what he would think when he got back.
At school, Hae-jin wasn't a standout student. She stayed under the radar, somehow managing to keep average grades despite her reckless lifestyle. One of her friends at school was Parker Choi. They had many similarities, but they weren't really close.
When she was 13, Hae-jin held her first large party. She invited the whole grade, and Parker was one of the people there. She didn't talk with him much, and since she was unable to see through the mist, she didn't see or hear him get attacked when he was walking home. In fact, she was probably the person who found the party the least eventful out of everyone.
When he got back, Sung-won scolded Hae-jin a lot. He grounded her and started to take her on all of his business trips with him. This caused Hae-jin's grades to plummet, causing her to have to get held back a year in school. Hae-jin's father got more and more angry every day and turned to drinking in an attempt to solve his problems. This was a bad influence on Hae-jin, and it affected her more as she got older.
One day, Sung-won stayed out late at a bar. He had a lot to drink and ended up fainting, causing him to have to be driven to the hospital. Hae-jin was sent to stay with her mother while Sung-won recovered from a fall that resulted from him fainting, and decided that she wanted to stay. Her father was happy to let her go, thinking of her as a burden.
Since they had arrived, Hae-jin and her mother had both become fluent in English. Her mother had got herself a career as a dance teacher at a nearby dance school, and she tried to get Hae-jin back into dance. Hae-jin had already quit long ago, and refused, to her mother's dismay.
Meanwhile, Hae-jin would sneak out every night to party. Whether with school friends or friends of friends or even people who she had only just met, she went to many different parties. At school, Hae-jin had somehow rescued her grades, not enough to make her a good student, but enough that she was able to graduate high school on track, even though she was a year late.
At a party right after she graduated, Hae-jin met Dionysus, who was drawn to the party by the large amount of women and booze. Dionysus challenged Hae-jin to a drinking contest, whoever could drink the most without stopping would win. With all of the alcohol that she was unable to process, she got alcohol poisoning and died quickly.
Dionysus, feeling bad for the girl, since he knew that he would have won anyways, brought her back to life as a wine nymph. After bringing her outside to have a little talk, he agreed to send her to camp, in order to help her recover. So, Hae-jin was whisked off to camp by a fellow wine nymph, where she is now.
