Cassandra was a woman from the 5th century. After wrongly accused of being a witch for knowing how to make minor potions, which she learn from her mother who was a daughter of Hecate, she gave up the company of men to join Artemis in the hunt. While she was there, she felt happy and contented. Because of her beauty and skills in making potions, Cassandra attracted Hermes, the god of messengers. Hermes, on the other hand, had other plans.
He was mad at Artemis for killing seven of his sons for accidentally seeing the hunters in the bath. Artemis claims that they did it on purpose. But, the truth is, they have been looking for their lost little brother, who left the camp without permission. So, using Cassandra, he intends to make Artemis mad.
This caught Artemis' attention and told her hunter to stop with this relationship. Cassandra said that she would, but she didn't. Her dates with Hermes continued and her love grew even stronger. One night, with the help of Eros, Hermes convinced Cassandra to have sex in her lady's temple.
When Artemis caught them, she was furious. She disown Cassandra and tried to hunt her down. However, Hermes, although wanting to make Artemis mad, had finally fallen in love with her and doesn't want her to die. He took her away and tried to hide her from Artemis' wrath. However, Artemis wasn't dumb. She made a curse on her to make a scent that Artemis and her sacred animals can track her. Although Cassandra is no longer part of the hunt, she was a born hunter and she was a gifted even before she joined. This made a bit harder for Artemis to look with her because of her hiding skills and Hermes' power hiding most of her scent.
After the fourth month of giving birth to her child, Hermes' blessing wear off and soon Artemis tried to hunt her down. She didn't want her child to die in Artemis' hand. So, she went to her old friend, who was a daughter of her lover. She told her everything that happen and ask her friend to protect her child. Wanting a child ever since she was married, her friend gladly agrees to hide her brother from the goddess. Before she left, Cassandra told her that the child's name was Blathazar.
Balthazar, or Bal, had a normal childhood, if you consider making real-life gaming weapons normal. His dad was a fan of Assassin Creed and always had him help make dangerous weapons like the hidden blade and the rope dart. His mom's hobby, on the other hand, was hunting. They will go to the woods and hunt down animals. His mom would always say that he was better with traps than she was, though he wasn't sure how a nine year old could be any good at planting bear traps than a normal adult. Unknown to him, his mom was always bring him to the forest to see if the curse on him wore off. Like his real mother, he also bear the scent of the hunt but only in a minor degree. It wouldn't make the Artemis hunt him down but it can make the goddess' sacred animals irritated and make them attack him.
On his fourteenth birthday, his parents had an afternoon picnic in the backyard. This was also the day his mom will tell him the truth about his existence and about Artemis. She didn't want to tell him, but she knows she has to. She and her husband didn't bring their weapons today since the house is just a few steps away. They start giving their gives. From his dad, he gave him a hooded jacket that modern day assassins would normally wear. His mom made a leather necklace with a bone of a snake as its decore. Before Bal could thank them, a giant bronze ball fell down next to them, almost killing them. Bal screams as he saw three Laistrygonian Giants, ready to kill him. His adopted father, a son of Demeter, summon vines and intangles them with it but he knew that it won't last. He told his family to hide as he tries to kill them. They nod and ran away to the house. His father manage to kill two of them, but the last one was able to throw an another ball at him, killing him instantly.
At the attic, where Bal's dad hid all of the Assassin Creed weapons, he and his mom hid. He notice that all of the weapons that he made with his dad, that were made from cheap metal, were now made of bronze. He fitted two hidden blades on both of his arms as he waited for his mom to finish blocking the door. When she was done, she went near him and hugged him. She pulled away and told her everything that his real mother told her. Once she was done, Bal cried. Before she can comfort him, the door exploded and the last Laistrygonian Giant appeared. She gave him an address and ran to kill it but the giant just swatted her aside and she hit a nearby cabinet. Bal screamed his mom, who he just knew was his sister. Without thinking, he charged the monster. The giant punched but dodges it with ease, he knew that it was slow and it was easy to dodge if you are careful. He unsheath the hidden blades and slab it in the gut, killing it. It turned into gold dust and blew away.
When the ambulance came and took his sister away, he said nothing, thinking that was the best option he had so far. At the hospital, the doctor said that his dad, or brother-in-law, is dead and his sister is in a coma because of the blow in her back. He went to his sister's ward and looked at her. She was his sister and he couldn't believe it. He wanted it to be a dream, but he knew it is real. He had to go somewhere. From what he heard from his sister, they all have a strong scent to monsters and he has the strongest scent among the family. He knew it will be dangerous if they stay together, with her in a coma. She already gave an address to where it is safe for him. He has to go there. He kissed her in the cheek and said his goodbye then walked away from the hospital with his packback on.
He traveled to Long Island on foot. On his journey, he met some people and they told him to stay but he said no. It will be too dangerous for them. He also met a few monsters. Some he killed, other he hid. He was good in knowing if he is good enough to kill a monster or not and will hide if he isn't. He arrives at Camp Half Blood after he was almost killed by the werewolves. When he got there, he had only one word on his mind: Safe.
