Looking Into My Life

Hyung-Seok is a somewhat sensitive kid, but remains happy or neutral most of the time, only slightly upset when he reflects on his past. Out of the trials he's faced, he came out a strong person who could deal with conflicts in a positive and responsible way and found ways to make things more appealing to himself.

He is generally happier and more optimistic then he had ever really been in his life, and is the person you can go to be cheered up. Although there are the moments that he calls "blackouts", where there is only dark and no stars to light up the deceiving maze that is his mind. During these times, he tends to become a quieter and more closed off person who can snap at any little thing, as his patience becomes a short wire that connects to a bomb called anger.

After going through all the trauma Hyung-Seok has been through, it's a matter of time before you reach your destination, or destroy yourself on the way. Turned from self destructive, depressed child into an energized, optimistic teenager could be in some eyes a challenge, and others a simple task.

There was once a pair of children, two boys to be exact, who lived in an abandoned shack on the far outer edges of the great city of Ulsan in South Korea. The two boys were orphaned brothers who had never found their way to a foster shelter because of how far they had wandered out from the downtown area. Now, they were essentially lost. It was fine though, the boys managed to survive on their own. They stole regularly from stores nearby (without getting caught of course) and had fixed up the rusty shed so that it was suitable for living condition.

They also still attended public school, and visited the library regularly to keep themselves literate. They went to a public goverment funded school, and to buy textbooks sold items they stole for money.

The boy we will focus on was called Jeong Eun, and held the age of twenty at this time. Eun, who had recently reached adulthood, could no longer live on the streets like an old hound. He needed to make up for all the years he'd missed of a normal child's life, and most importantly, he wanted his children, if he ever had children, to never have the same experiences as him.

So he left his childhood friend behind and set off into the busy city of Ulsan. Before Eun's parents had died in a car crash, he had always been invested in music. He remembered his parents calling him a musical prodigy, and he thought if what they said was true, there was a possibility of getting a job in the music industry. Eun began to try out for different companies under the name of Haneul Cho, as his old identity as well as his old life was behind him now.

Because he was at an older age then most applicants, it was harder to get in, since they wanted fresh material. He finally signed a contract with SKY entertainment, and began his training. His training sessions lasted three days before he debuted in a four person boy group called KMA. Three years after that, he began his solo career.

Now a successful musician, Eun had enough money to support himself, keep his career going, and finally find a lover, which, in some terms, he did.

Eun always particularly favored the night over day, and the secrets he harbored and the life he lived suits his views. A certain goddess happened to be attracted this, and began to keep Eun in her sights more often.

It started with the concerts at first. The famous Greek goddess of Night would appear disguised as a female fan in the crowd, here to enjoy the music as such, and then disappear again after. She loved Eun's more darkly themed songs, and concerts featuring those songs she attended. Then after awhile, she began to find ways to get closer to Eun, and on a little escapade during a hazy night Eun barely remembered was where her plans were set.

Although Eun had been too intoxicated to remember anything that night, he had impregnated Nyx with a baby boy.

To say Nyx had planned the whole thing would be inaccurate, but in some ways, it was her influence that made this happen. But after this event, Nyx decided this boy would be the light she would hold up to Olympus to show them she was there equal, or (in her mind) better then them.

It began with his birth.

On April 2nd, Nyx gave birth to a hospital in Ulsan, Eun's home town, to Jeong Hyung-Seok, but for now was known as Cho Hyung-Seok. The famous artist Haneul Cho's son. At first, Eun had no idea what was going on until bits and pieces of that night began to come back to him and piece together a good enough picture for him to figure out what happened next. Although most men involved in affairs would immediately conclude it was a mistake and refuse to take the child in, Eun was surprisingly more then happy to have Hyung-Seok in his home.

With his son there, everything felt less lonely, and he that he was doing some good in the world by giving this boy a home. As Hyung-Seok aged into his toddler years, Eun finally retired from his music career to pay more attention to his son. On the night the before Hyung-Seok's fifth birthday, Eun received a message from Nyx in the form of a dream. In the dream, he was informed that Hyung-Seok was the son of a goddess, who would fall into grieve danger if not taken to a special camp in America for safety.

At first, Eun was skeptical about this, considering that this could be a product of his overactive imagination, but as he thought more about this he began to believe Nyx's words, and eventually scraped together his money to move to America.

This is where things went wrong. On the plane trip from Europe to America, a bad (somewhat unpredictable) storm hit the plane, making it alter off course. The storm eventually sent the plane tumbling into the Atlantic sea later to be found three years from then. This was at Nyx's advantage as it was during the night, and with the god Poseidon's help, a fleet of star nymphs and naiads saved him.

His father however, wasn't so lucky.

Eun's body happened to be one of the first few that were found when the search for the renaming passengers who hadn't been saved began, and by this time, Hyung-Seok had been sent on the rest of his way to America with help from wind spirits Nyx had persuaded. When Hyung-Seok saw his father's lifeless face on the television while walking home from the library in Manhattan, even at a young age there was one thing going through his mind, Daddy is gone.

When Eun's relation to Hyung-Seok was revealed, he was declared an orphan and was sent to a foster home. At this time, Hyung-Seok was eight, and nearing the where he would face the real dangers of a life of a demigod.

After three months, he was adopted into the Smith family, and given a new name, but he never responded to it, always saying, "Call me Hyung-Seok. This is the name my father gave me" in the best English he could muster. His foster parents grew impatient of his rebellious demeanor and began to treat him more horribly then their other kids.

First, it started with the scolding. Everything he was scolded for, from getting the smallest mistake on his homework, to being accused of breaking things he didn't even knew existed in the house. After the scolding, came the more physical abuse. When he did something wrong, he'd most likely be slapped and hit as a result of it.

And as he began school in America, it got worse. Kids often teased him for his "small eyes", and that he knew little English. He struggled to make friends, and when he did, they often were fakes just out to find something to use against him. Edging into middle school, Hyung-Seok learned not to trust anyone, no matter how friendly they seemed.

The only reassurance he had now, was an old ragged blanket that had said to be found with him when he was recovered from the plane crash. He believed it was his father's and therefore refused to depart from it. When Hyung-Seok turned eleven, his foster parents had divorced, and he had been stuck with the mother who turned into a huge alcoholic. His foster siblings with his foster father, he had no one to turn to, and under the influence of alcohol his mother treated him more horrible then ever.

One night, she tried to burn his precious blanket, and that was the day he let the monsters loose. After all the crying in the back corner of his room, after all the moments of rage, and the planning he'd always do, Hyung-Seok refused to take it anymore, and finally lost control.

An uncontrollable flood of dark bullets struck the woman, and she fell dead on the floor within seconds. Not only drained of energy, but full of shock, he stumbled away from the dead body of his foster mother, not able to believe what happened. After awhile he finally came into terms with what had happened and knew he needed to get away quickly, so he packed up his belongings into a ragged backpack and headed back to the foster shelter.

Hyung-Seok often worried what would become of him if they ever discovered he had murdered Ms. Smith, but this never happened. Soon after this, he was adopted to another family, the Omari family. The Omari family was weary of Hyung-Seok and kept their distance, as they knew of what happened to his last foster mother.

The Omari family where a very religious Muslim family, which required Hyung-Seok to practice Islam, which was strange for him, since he had always went to church on Sundays with the Smith family, and on Easter back in Korea. He never really got used to it, and it became awkward for him.

Some few months after Hyung-Seok has moved in with the Omari family, his powers began to start acting up. He soon discovered he could make shields, bullets, and weapons out of the shadows around him, and when he was alone he practiced. He didn't know what to call these powers or where they came from, he just knew how to use them, and that they killed his foster mother, and to him, that was all he needed.

A year passed, Hyung-Seok is in seventh grade. Children in middle school are less harsh as the subject of bullying becomes more prominent, but it's still there, and it was just his luck that he had his own personal torturers. The group of boys approached him one warm Thursday afternoon, on the last week of school, to give him a "farewell" present.

His personal torturers had in reality been harpies, bird-like Greek monsters with that seemed to have feathers sprouting of their arms, and beakish mouths. The boys had dragged Hyung-Seok to an old alley behind the school, and from there they had dissolved from their costumes to attack.

At this time, Hyung-Seok had no idea what was going on, but his demigod instincts told him Fire, and he did. He fired a dozen shadow bullets at the first two harpies, who shrieked as they were struck and dissolved into monster dust. This little trick had taken almost a quarter of his energy already, and judging by this, he wouldn't last long by himself.

But who would believe some random Asian kid yelling about monsters?

Hyung-Seok backed into the dumpster, and eventually climbed on top of it in his rush to get away from the two remaining harpies. The other harpies he hadn't attacked grew impatient and jumped on him. Almost subconsciously, Hyung-Seok put up a shield, barricading the bird-like monsters away.

Although his energy was draining, he managed to create a sword from the dumpster's shadow, and now had a weapon. He let down his shield, and yet clumsy with the weapon, he stabbed the slouched harpy in the stomach once he knocked it back when it was attempting to fly away. The last harpy came on him, managing to deeply graze his left shoulder with it's beak-like mouth.

Hyung-Seok cried out in pain, stumbling back but finally he finished the last one off, chopping it's head clean off. The monsters' remains dispersed into dust, and Hyung-Seok collapsed into unconsciousness from pain, and loss of strength.

Days later, he awoke in a hospital with a minor arm injury, and was later discharged the next day. His foster parents weren't too concerned about him, but did ask him what happened. They tried to force answers out of him, but he would say nothing.

Finally after another year (that "conveniently" held several more monster attacks) Hyung-Seok reached High School. Around this time did he finally slip into a deep depression as the trauma of his quick childhood finally caught up to him. He started to have more nightmares about the death of his first foster mother, followed by unreal horrid dreams of harpies.

He began to fall back in school work, and his grades were barely holding onto slippery ledges. He spent more time in his room then ever, and soon began to leave the house on his own during the night to the central park. One night, out in the darkness, he was attacked by a hellhound who had caught his scent.

Now more familiar with his powers, he was able to defeat the hellhound, still able to remain conscious long enough to stumble back to his foster house.

It was also at this time did he delve farther into his sexuality, and noticed he was not only attracted to females, but males too. This thought drove him crazy, and he wondered if he was insane. After awhile, he accepted it and actively embraced it. When he finally gathered the courage to tell his foster parents, they threw him onto the streets, saying "the did not raise a cursed child".

Now homeless and parent-less once again, Hyung-Seok headed back to the foster shelter, but was attacked on the way there by a flock of Stymphalian Birds. This time, he barely fought them, instead he kind of just collapsed right there on the sidewalk to be pecked to death, if it wasn't for Nyx he would be long dead by now.

Nyx had sent a saytr who was nearby to go after her son and save him from the deadly birds. He was lucky to only have a few gashes across his arms and legs, nothing too vital when the saytr arrived. With a bow and quiver of arrows the saytr wielded, he defeated the birds, and dragged Hyung-Seok to the nearest hospital where he woke up several days later and was surprised to find some teenage boy he'd never seen before sitting besides him.

The saytr, who's name was Jamie, kept trying to inform Hyung-Seok of Camp Half-Blood, but the confused boy refused to listen and ignored Jamie whenever he came. About two days after, he was brought back to the foster shelter to be adopted again, and this time it was by the Kaine family, who happened to have a son that Hyung-Seok had a huge crush on.

About two years had passed with many more dangerous attacks, and Hyung-Seok was now a sophmore in high school who not only faced piles of homework, but monsters practically weekly. On his way home from school, to the store, to the libray, to the park, in the backyard... Monsters met him anywhere and everywhere, and it was impossible to get away from them without dragging attention himself, and it was difficult trying to convince himself he wasn't insane, because everyone else seemed to think so.

Jay Kaine, who happened to be a son of Aphrodite, could sense Hyung-Seok's attraction to him, and even as humble as he is, would never admit he liked him back, well not to his face anyway. The fact was that Jay more or less was obsessed with him, and ever since he had accepted he was homosexual he had brought his the subject of his crush out into the open conscious of his mind where he thought about him 24/7.

Adopting him, well Jay who had been sixteen at the time, couldn't really decide if that was good or bad thing, but now he could see Hyung-Seok every, single, day. And he was happy with that.

Another year later, Jay found Hyung-Seok under the leafy canopy of a tree in their backyard, staring up at the starry canvas with tear tracks printed on his cheeks. It took no genius to see he was obviously unhappy, with or without Jay's powers, and immediately concluding it may have something to do with him he went to comfort the younger boy.

"What do you want?" the boy snapped sharply, not in the mood for Jay.

"I.. want to help you. Mind telling me why you're crying?" he whispered, lacing charmspeak into his words as he crawled over to the space by the Korean teen.

For a split second, Hyung-Seok faltered, and then began to spill everything. Under the enchantment, no horror was left unveiled, and by the end he was in tears again as if reliving the whole thing. He leaned on Jay for support (Jay loved this) as he sobbed, and Jay stroked his hair and told him to keep crying, to "Let go of the pain".

By now, Jay had realized Hyung-Seok was a demigod, and needed to be taken to Camp, but if that saytr couldn't, what luck did he have? Jay wasn't a manipulative person, and didn't want to use Hyung-Seok's crush on him to get him to go, but he worried about his safety above everything. He began convincing himself this way the only way.

Meanwhile, on this same night, an assassination was occurring, and the boys would awake the next to day to their dead parents lying on blood coated bed sheets. Now both of the orphans, Jay's first initiative was to take Hyung-Seok back to Camp with him and become a Year-Round camper, but he knew Hyung-Seok wouldn't appeal to the idea, so instead, he made it sound like another orphan shelter.

Hyung-Seok was skeptical of this, and at first refused to go, but as Jay slowly coaxed him to, he finally gave in. It took months, but Jay finally got him to do it.

During this period Jay also worked on getting Hyung-Seok out of depression. He knew it would take awhile, and the boy would still have some more darker moments, but he knew somewhere in here was a happy spirit waiting to be freed so he did his best. Jay entertained him with jokes, stories, and just general quotes he remembered here and there to help him rise from his sorrowful state. The more Hyung-Seok laughed, the closer Jay was to his goal, and this made him feel at peace with himself.

On the road to Long Island, the monsters appearances seemed to rise everyday, and soon the two never really stayed in one place longer then a few hours because they always needed to be on guard. Jay actually had a weapon, an axe to be precise, while Hyung-Seok had his powers that he was totally fine with in all honesty.

Along the road they eventually met an animal nymph, a fox nymph, named Aris. Jay was suspsicious of Aris and jealous aswell, because Hyung-Seok seemed to take a liking to her that was too close for his taste. Along the rest of the way, in turn for protection, Aris who knew how to alter the mist, hid the boys from officials looking for them. It was a nice trade, but unfortunate for Jay, Hyung-Seok and Aris got even closer.

Driven by jealously, Jay began to become somewhat clingy and protective, glaring at Aris and flipping her rude hand signs whenever she tried to iniate conversation with Hyung-Seok. Hyung-Seok was oblivious to this anyway, and just dismissed this as odd behaviour because of their clashing personalities.

The day the two finally reached camp happened to be Hyung-Seok's birthday, and almost instantaneously, he was claimed by Nyx.

"When you see the light, run for it, for there's no doubt that it may never come again."

Note: 6/9 Powers are still locked.

  1. Children of Nyx have the ability to conjure weapon out of pure shadows which can be used for combat; however, only one weapon can be conjured at a time and it cannot be bigger than the one who conjured it. This can also be used for other non-combative objects, but within reason, something might be shaped like an iPod, but as shadows do not have any working parts and source of electricity, such as batteries, they would not actually play music.
  2. Children of Nyx can create solid bullets out of shadows and fire them from their fingertips. The bullets fly fast enough to possibly tear into an opponent’s skin.

  1. Children of Nyx have the ability to conjure a dome of solid shadows around them which will defend against attacks for a short time.
  2. Children of Nyx have the ability to conjure a cloak of darkness which will blunt physical attacks, but slows the movement of the conjurer.

  1. Children of Nyx are innately stronger and are slightly less drained by their powers during the night.
  2. Children of Nyx can see perfectly in the night as if it were day and darkness in general.
  3. Children of Nyx can communicate with and command nocturnal animals.
  4. Children of Nyx, during the night, sense any motions in their vicinity (up to roughly a city block away). Large, rapid movements are easy to distinguish, while smaller, slower movements blend together like background noise, requiring focus to single out.

  1. Children of Nyx have the ability to Shadow Travel,to teleport from shadow to shadow; the further the distance, the more is energy drained.
  2. Children of Nyx can bend shadows around them, concealing them for a short time.
  3. Children of Nyx are able to create complete darkness in a small area for a short time, extinguishing all light sources. They can also perform this power to a lighter extent, by putting out a single light bulb or candle with a thought.
  4. Children of Nyx can telekinetically move and transform their shadow constructs. The more constructs moved and the bigger they are, the more energy is drained.
  5. Children of Nyx have the ability to create intangible stars, which will light an area for a short time.

3 Months After Character is Made

  1. Children of Nyx can cause true night in an area for a short time, blocking sunlight over a battlefield. Their passive boosts and the abilities of other demigods are affected accordingly. This effect lasts for at most a minute before fading back, and can only be used once a day. They can also create a pair of shadow wings to fly with (which drains less energy than shadow travel).

6 Months After Character is Made

  1. Children of Nyx are able to create up to seven nocturnal animals, no larger than their normal sizes, to serve them for a short time. While the animals are summoned the user is slower, and they are drained whenever one of the animals is harmed or when the animals are released.

9 Months After Character is Made

  1. Children of Nyx have the ability to shed their flesh and turn into a state of pure night. While in this state, the user is granted flight and their existing abilities become stronger. They are intangible in this state and anyone they touch has their vision stripped away for the rest of the transformation; however, once the user changes back they will be extremely drained and immobile for a long time. They would possibly pass out.

  1. Children of Nyx tend to prefer the dark.
  2. Children of Nyx are often nocturnal; preferring to operate at night and sleep during the day.
  3. Children of Nyx tend to have a darker outlook on life and events of the world.
  4. Children of Nyx often pursue jobs that take place at night or in darkness such as being a security guard, nightclub bouncing, and mining.
  5. Children of Nyx are typically favored and get along with nocturnal animals, such as bats, raccoons, ocelots, etc.
