Derek Lewis was working in his father’s coffee shop one day when he saw a beautiful lady enter. The lady, Aphrodite, under the name Margaret Richards, walked up to the counter and introduced herself. Like all men, Derek was charmed at Aphrodite’s beauty. He wanted her, but the thing is, he’s already married. Derek still wanted Aphrodite and they secretly met each other for five months until Aphrodite told him that she was pregnant with his child. Derek, not wanting any trouble with his wife, Sarah, told Aphrodite to leave and that when the baby is born, to place it in their house’s doorstep, to which Aphrodite agreed to do. But before the two parted Aphrodite told him the truth, that she was a goddess. Derek, who was a superstitious man, believed her.
Nine months passed by and Derek continued on with his daily activities. Finally on May 17, 1997, Derek opened his front door one morning and saw a baby basket placed in the bottom step. He knew that it was he’s and Aphrodite’s child. He brought the child to Sarah and his other son, Stephen, who were eating their breakfast. Sarah felt pity for the child and told Derek that they should keep her of course, Derek whole heartedly agreed to keep the baby. They named her Madeleine Jane.
Maddie grew up surrounded by a loving family. She was a bit of a rebel girl and always got into trouble. She didn’t have many friends since she was a bit of a loner at school. She wasn’t really popular but she wasn’t a loser either. At the age of seven she was diagnosed with dyslexia, since she was having difficulties in school. Unlike most demigods, she didn’t have ADHD. Because of her dyslexia, she was sent to a school that specialized in dyslexic students. She did well in that school, getting satisfying grades ranging from D’s to C’s.
At the age of twelve, Maddie had her first monster attack. She was walking home when she was attacked by a harpy. She was frightened and tried to run away but the harpy caught up to her. She was about to be killed when an arrow killed the harpy. She didn’t know who shot it as she ran from the scene quickly. Maddie didn’t tell anyone about the incident with the harpy and continued on with her life.
Maddie continued having monster attacks, varying between hellhounds, harpies and once when she was fourteen on a vacation, a telekhine. Her father always questioned her why she was scratched and bruised whenever a monster attack happened. He was getting suspicious. Finally a few days before Maddie’s fifteenth birthday, Derek told her the truth that she was a half-blood. Right after he told her that, a harpy attacked. Luckily a few half-bloods who were returning on a quest saw them and saved them. Derek then said that it was time for Maddie to get to Camp. Maddie didn’t want to but after much prodding, she agreed. They journeyed to Camp and were attacked by a hellhound. Maddie managed to kill it, using a bow and arrow a half-blood gave her, with a lucky shot. They weren’t attacked by monsters again but the journey was very anxious. They arrived at Camp now and Maddie is claimed by her mother.
