Jin Ae was the daughter of the CEO of a renowned shipping company. She came from an extremely wealthy family due to her father's position. Jin Ae was the kind, loving, caring, and respectful young woman she was raised to be. Because of her father's career, she was expected to always be proper and appeal to her father's colleagues. One day when she was sent to Paris to represent her father's company at a meeting, she met him. Hermes, under the name of Matthieu Chambre, was posing as the underling of a powerful shipping company based in Greece. Jin Ae was only twenty one and she had her whole life ahead of her. She practically threw it all away for this man Jin Ae stole her nights away in Paris with Matthieu, falling in love with him over the lavish dates and balls he took her to. Jin Ae felt herself falling deeper and deeper in love as she was showered in affection like she had never been before. She felt herself experiencing pure freedom for the first time--a release from her tiger-like parents. On her last night in Paris, Hyun Jae was conceived. Jin Ae returned home the following day only to hear that she would be set up in an arranged marriage. Of course, Jin Ae never got her hopes up that she would possibly have a future with Matthieu thanks to her family, so she saw this coming.
However, when she took a pregnancy test and it turned out to be positive, she started to panic. He family would disown her! She couldn't let them find out that she had mothered an illegitimate child for her and Hyun Jae's sake. Jin Ae had no choice but to console in her fiance, Shintaro. Shintaro was from a noble Japanese/Korean family who had good ties with Jin Ae's family, which is why the two had been engaged. Shintaro was kind and understanding like Jin Ae, and told her not to worry. He didn't see this as her fault as she didn't know about the marriage until she had returned home. Shintaro agreed to bring the news out as her and Shintaro's child, not the child of some Frenchmen Jin Ae had a fling with. This delighted both families and virtually had no cons. As time went on and Jin Ae began spending more and more time with Shintaro, the two eventually fell in love. Shintaro and Jin Ae became inseparable, having the relationship of best friends but the chemistry of a wedded couple. The two moved to a small fishing village north of South Korea, living in a large home. Hyun Jae was born there.
Hyun Jae, to Jin Ae's demise, had the looks of both Shintaro and Jin Ae but had Matthieu's unique brown eye colour. It seemed like the colour of melted chocolate with flecks of gold lining the bottoms, a high contrast to Shintaro's almost coal black eyes and Jin Ae's very light brown eyes. Shintaro and Jin Ae were certain that their families would notice. but to their surprise, only compliments came. Hyun Jae was a pampered girl growing up. She was constantly showered with love and used her charismatic personality to charm any person without fail. She gets her optimistic attitude and leadership skills from her father, mostly because he went on to pursue the family business.
Hyun Jae went to school like a normal child, and her life was pretty normal. She was an okay student, popular with her classmates, and even had a few boyfriends. Hyun Jae was also granted a younger sister, the child of Shintaro and Jin Ae. Her name was Ayame, a Japanese name in honour of Shintaro's side of the family. Hyun Jae never knew that Shintaro wasn't her true father. By the time she was fourteen, she was selected to study abroad in America. She was sent to an international school in Manhattan, living in the dorms there. Her English skills were already fluent enough that she spoke without a significant accent. That spring, however, she found herself wound up in her first monster attack.
She was with her best friends Francesca and Leon, who were actually part of the Camp world already. Francesca was Leon's satyr, unbeknownst to Leon, and Leon was also a son of Hermes (also something Leon didn't know). Francesca also sensed that Hyun Jae was a demigod, and made it her unofficial job to protect the two. While walking around the backstreets of Manhattan, a hellhound caught up with their scent and tracked them down. With both demigods unarmed and Francesca trying her best, hope was dim. An upperclassman came to their rescue, a Huntress that was taking a break from the Hunt and studying the same school Hyun Jae and Leon were in. Giving Francesca some Ambrosia, she quickly ushered the demigods back onto campus before they attracted any more monsters.
Back at campus, Francesca and the Huntress, Lily, explained everything about their parents, Camp, and their growing powers. They also mentioned their scent, how it attracted monsters, and how their scent will affect them vitally. They basically explained everything they needed to know. Leon and Hyun Jae called their respective parents, asking to leave for Camp as soon as possible. Jin Ae was surprised at this, but Shintaro had already experienced this in his past when he found out his sister was actually his half-sister. Like Jin Ae, before his mother married his father and gave birth to him, she met Hephaestus as a Japanese man. Together, they conceived his older half-sister, Haruhi. Haruhi left when they were teenagers to go to Camp, although he still sees her.
Shintaro further explained Hyun Jae's case, convincing Jin Ae to give her permission as well. Hyun Jae and Leon were set to go to Camp with Francesca that summer. Lily, after arranging things with the Hunt, also agreed to accompany them to Camp because of her growing fondness for the younger demigods. That trip to Camp was where everything went wrong. Taking a taxi to drop them off at the Hill, they attracted two hellhounds. Defeating one was easy, but defeating two while making sure the others were safe was going to be hard for Lily and Francesca. A third hellhound came as soon as Lily just began to take on the first.
Desperate and out of options, they instructed Hyun Jae and Leon flee to Camp and to ask for reinforcements. Hyun Jae was as hard-headed as ever, refusing to leave their sides. She told Leon to go alone and hurry. Lily, against her choices, have Hyun Jae a bow and a set of arrows. Hyun Jae had remarkable aim for someone who had never picked up a weapon in her life, but wasn't well trained. Defeating one hellhound and already spent, the three hoped for a miracle to come. Hyun Jae ended up breaking her leg as the hellhound threw her to the ground while she was attacking it, and the hellhound killed her instantly in her crippled state.
Lily, now fueled with rage, killed the remaining hellhound. Leon arrived with the reinforcement of three campers but it was too late. Francesca and Hyun Jae were dead. Carrying the two back into Camp, they decided to bury Francesca. Leon, burdened with Hyun Jae's death and thinking it was his fault, he begged to his father to make a miracle happen just this once. That moment, he had gotten claimed by Hermes. Hyun Jae was resurrected as a communication nymph out of the pity Hermes had for Leon.
Hyun Jae began living in the Sanctuary ever since.
