personality

"Less hoping, more stealing."
— cain abel, 13

the road to hell is paved with good intentions. with cain, rest assured that she has none of those in mind. cain's playful words are the least annoying thing about her. some time between losing their house and having to avoid selling their left eye, people recognize that cain is more than an irritating ring in their ears. she hopes for one thing in life and that's trouble. trouble is eager to answer her call. her cell tower won't be dropping its signal anytime soon. she unabashedly says that she maintains it pretty well. as the poster girl for petty crime, it's a given. when asked why, she laughs it off. because fuck good intentions, good anything. to cain, hope is a lie.

hope is as addictive as any drug you could ever get your hands on, and cain is a damn good example of it. there's not much allure when the aftermath hits, so most people never have to suffer through seeing her again. but the first time is the brightest, the liveliest, and the worst. might very well crush your lungs (there was one incident). cain won't stay put for a second time. her thieving clutches are a ghost of the past in any memory, always. helped her get away with a little more than she could chew. she rarely outright acknowledges her second mother, but doesn't hold her breath for what was left. powers are useful; mothers are not. cain has no love for extra packages, living or not, and that's final.

history

✦~✦~✦

tl;dr
— mortal mother in abusive marriage. hopeless situation. has a fling with elpis. husband, not wanting a child, attempts to force her to abort. she refuses. he kills her. follows her.
— cain is sent to her aunt, of whom she speaks less about than her parents. implied heavy abuse and unhappy childhood. at twelve, her aunt dies in a monster attack at the beach. cain's involvement is shrouded. sent to grandparents in south korea.
— starts acting up, but it's tame. dislikes school, gets scolded for this. gets expelled. sent back to the states when she witnesses a murder and is nearly killed. presumably learns about her heritage around this time.
— runs away from her second cousin's household. gets into increasingly more fatal exploits. evades monster attacks. family still worried about her. shit goes down. learns about camp. after several delays, she's persuaded to head there.

"my mother was a charity case," cain said flatly.
hana hated it when she used that tone. she could see in the dim light how cain's twinkling eyes sputtered out. if she squinted hard enough, she knew she would see cain's clenched jaw.

"elpis felt bad for her. not that it did her any good."

but she had you. hana thought, but her tongue remained still.

✦~✦~✦

"who the fuck names their kid cocaine?"
"my stepdad. guess that was his way of confessing to murder."
   silence. "i'm so-"
her laugh is mirthless. "don't be. he killed himself the same way the morning after her funeral."

✦~✦~✦

hana wouldn't have put it past her to preen while stripping. but as she dabbed at her own injuries with the disinfectant and chewed on her half of the ambrosia, she noticed cain had grown eerily quiet. it had been her who had insisted on them not looking at each other, because cain enjoyed flirting with her in almost every situation. but cain's lack of attempts was concerning. she turned to look, since she was done anyway.

she must have made a sound, because cain turned around to make eye contact. too late. hana had already seen the whip marks crisscrossing over the lower half of her back.
"you were bound to see them one day," cain said in a sing-song manner. her eyes, however, were blank.
hana swallowed, at a loss for words. then cain smiled, and it was like permission for air to whoosh back into her lungs. she tried to ignore the implications of that.
   "i'm from kentucky."
   "you? from kentucky?"
"not all of us start somewhere big, love."
she brushed off the nickname. "i thought you were from detroit."
cain shrugged. the movement directed hana's eyes to her bare shoulders. more scars. more lash marks. "my aunt didn't make kentucky memorable enough."

✦~✦~✦

"pray, tell me, what kind of circumstances warrant you learning how to pick locks with your feet?"
"cram school in south korea," cain said brightly. "my grandparents were pretty anal about it."
   "you were there? when?"
"after my aunt died. i was twelve."
hana froze for a millisecond. "was that when you...?"
"beach visit. some kind of sea serpent. don't think i was the only one of our kind there to have that kind of reaction. yeah, i am attractive as hell, but i'd hope not to monsters. i'm not a big three kid." cain's lighthearted tone dropped with the next words. "i pushed my aunt into the water. saved my own skin and ran. when the police got there, they put it down as drowning."
   "the serpent?" hana asked carefully.
"someone must have taken care of it."

✦~✦~✦

"i already know you never studied. your attention span is too low. so surprise me." hana dragged her feet to slow the momentum of her swing.
   "i was a cheerleader."
   "no way."
   "yes way."
"there is a but there somewhere." hana laughed, pushing her swing faster.
cain pouted. "but some entitled asshole wanted to date me, i stole his car, so i got kicked off the team and expelled. his mom was on the council."
"ew. tell me you set that car on fire."
   "hana! are you enabling me?"
"shut up and tell me, cain."
"i stole his mom's car, then his best bud's, hooked them together, then crashed that train into the school's front doors."
"oh my god." hana couldn't stop the laughter that came.
cain looked very smug. "then i set them on fire."

✦~✦~✦

hana reached out to steady her. they were too high for cain's comfort.
"my grandparents didn't send me back here because i was too much trouble."
the information took hana aback. cain had not once offered any of it willingly. she made the answers obvious, but only at hana's persistence.
cain inhaled deeply, looking anywhere except below.
"classmate offered us lunch after this godawful project. got there. her sister pushed her off the roof."
dread filled hana. she found herself clasping cain's hand in hers. it was freezing.
"ten stories. then she tried to kill me, because of course i'm early to a murder scene."
"you don't have to continue," hana rushed out.
cain shook her head. "no. i want to. you deserve that much."
"okay." okay. hana set her shoulders.
"she got me good. clobbered me over the head with whatever she had as a plan b for her sister. never saw it coming." cain's laugh was raspy. hana squeezed her hand encouragingly.
"i woke up hanging by the edge of an open windowsill on the seventh floor."
   "how?"
"how do you think? powers. yoonkyung didn't have the same luxury."
cain breathed out, hard. she looked down at their interlaced fingers but didn't comment. "managed to have it in me to pull myself back inside. a couple of harpies had to show up." she shook her head again, disbelievingly. "still can't believe i made it out."
forget the sororicide. hana only cared that she'd gotten out. "i'm glad you did," she whispered.
"went back to shave her hair off." and like that, cheeky cain was back. almost. it didn't feel the same. "and get her arrested."

✦~✦~✦

"i will never be a conquest, cain."
"then, pray, tell me, what are you?"

✦~✦~✦

   "you're under arrest for-"
"dude, read me my rights. i know what i'm under arrest for."
cain was reprimanded by her handcuffs tightening. she mouthed can you believe this guy? to hana, who was unfairly wrapped up in an envious blanket with hot chocolate. hana fought back the urge to laugh at cain's annoyance.
"-notified by your guardian. you haven't shown up to your therapist in several months, and you have not gone home to your cousin since-"
cain tuned him out again. she let him babble for a couple more minutes then interrupted. "can i talk to her before you cart me off?"
he looked like he was about to reject the request until hana popped up at her side. "i don't mind, officer," she said loudly. "can you give us two minutes?" he got the point.
hana spoke before cain could even open her mouth. "help them. then go to camp."
cain stared at her. "you know what you're asking me to do, right?"
   "yes."
"they'd never believe me." no one ever does.
   "i believed you."
   "yeah, but you know me."
"your grandparents knew you too, but they didn't believe you."
cain looked wounded. hana hurried on before she could mope. "you can catch this killer, cain. you nearly did, and you didn't even mean to."
"he was about to hang you off a roof," cain said peevishly. "i stabbed him in the crotch with a salad fork."
"you're supposed to be the dramatic one. and thank you. but you saw his face. you heard his voice." and i got in the way. because you were more concerned about my state than chasing after the brute.
"you know i always run away."
those words were heavier than her joking tone. "you didn't run away from me."
cain's lips twitched. "you keep appearing like the garden gnomes halmeoni kept ordering no matter how many times i blew them up." but there was an acknowledgement in her eyes.
hana smiled. before she could regret not doing it, she leaned in for the fastest peck on the lips the universe had ever seen. it didn't matter. cain's jaw had dropped. she recovered fast enough to loop her handcuffed wrists over hana's head and step closer.
   "another good luck kiss please?"
"you don't need luck." she obliged anyway.
the officer from across the room cleared his throat loudly. they separated, but didn't step away.
"wait for each other?" hana asked.
"i don't do waiting, hana. if i get there first, i'll find a way to call you. maybe send naughty photos."
   "cain!"
   "not sorry."

✦~✦~✦

the camper studied cain piercingly. nothing too suspicious. jeans that had a few bites out of them, a few cuts across her cheek from claws, and half covered in blood. most people never made it to camp completely unscathed.
   "how old are you?"
   "seventeen."
"no one found you and got you here earlier?"
"if they did, i'm a bit too good at losing people."
"huh. alright then." the camper glanced over her head, where elpis' symbol still hovered.
   "welcome to camp half-blood."

"i offer you the benefit of hope - none."

Fights dirty. Prefers to flee when possible. Never misses a chance to take the piss out of an unlucky foe. Not enthusiastic about fighting, but likes the adrenaline. Close - and infuriatingly personal. It's hard to remember it's just sparring with Cain. Lacks strength for heavy duty blows, and is partial to aiming for distracting, shallow wounds. Not so much as fast than slippery. Uses powers mildly; only busts out the pithos as a last resort.

trivia

Offensive[]

  1. Children of Elpis can summon small, combustible jars that explode upon impact when thrown at enemies. These jar bombs release minimal shrapnel (i.e.: several large shards that make a blunt impact, not countless tiny shards that can pierce the skin) and cause a mild feeling of negativity and unease to linger over the area of the explosion. The more bombs summoned, the more energy they use.
  2. Children of Elpis can hope for an event to happen (e.g.: for an attack to hit or for them to remember where they misplaced an object) to slightly increase the chances of that event occurring, but with no guarantees, it'll happen. Hoping for events that are outlandish or overly specific (e.g.: for their opponent to spontaneously catch on fire as meteorites rain from the sky) has virtually no effect, since the chances of those events occurring are extremely low in the first place. The more strongly they hope for an event to happen, the more effective the boost will be, but the more energy they use. This ability must be selectively activated: if children of Elpis hope for an event without deliberately intending to boost the chance of that event occurring, they will not use energy but thus will not receive the boost.
  3. Children of Elpis can fire an intense, golden beam of fiery hope which will burn anything it touches.

Defensive[]

  1. Children of Elpis can blind an opponent with hope. This affects all forms of sight (spiritual vision, foresight, seeing potential futures, etc.) beyond just physical sight. Children of Elpis can maintain this ability indefinitely, but they themselves will be blinded by hope for the entire duration they maintain it.
  2. Children of Elpis can rapidly summon a large Greek jar (pithos) around themselves to act as a resilient shield. The lid of the jar can be removed, but anyone who tries to open it in such a manner immediately feels sick and is hit by a wave of negativity and unease. The jar disappears after the user exits it.

Passive[]

  1. Children of Elpis radiate an aura of hope and optimism which can be suppressed through conscious effort. Furthermore, they have the ability to detect how hopeful people near them are feeling.
  2. Children of Elpis do not tire as easily when they have their hopes up. They are more energetic and heal more quickly in locations where hope is especially strong.
  3. Children of Elpis see potential positive futures and ways to achieve them, though they have difficulty visualizing negative futures.
  4. Children of Elpis feel comfortable in small, confined areas (e.g.: inside a pithos they summon for defense). They can breathe freely in tight, enclosed spaces without running out of air, as long as the enclosed space is not filled with a substance such as water or sand.

Supplementary[]

  1. Children of Elpis can project their consciousnesses to locations where hope is especially strong. Although they can see, hear and smell their projected surroundings, they are unable to touch anything. They appear to onlookers as faint, intangible apparitions, and their physical bodies are unable to move during consciousness projection. The longer they project themselves, the more energy they use.
  2. Children of Elpis can summon a pair of shining, golden wings that allow them to fly briefly. The longer they fly, the more energy they use.
  3. Children of Elpis can bolster their teammates' spirits through their motivational words and actions, granting them a boost of hopeful energy in combat.
  4. Children of Elpis can summon several pithos to hold objects or act as decorations. Maintaining these constructs requires concentration, for they disappear once the user stops concentrating on them.
  5. Children of Elpis can emit a faint golden glow to brighten their surroundings in the dark. They can glow more brightly in locations where hope is especially strong.

3 Months After Character is Made[]

Children of Elpis can blind more than one person with hope at once. If this power is used, it will simultaneously blind everyone, friend or foe alike, within what would be their field of view. Children of Elpis can maintain this ability indefinitely, but they themselves will be blinded by hope for the entire duration they maintain it.

6 Months After Character is Made[]

Children of Elpis can summon a pithos containing an essence of negativity, representing a negative spirit that was trapped inside Pandora's Jar alongside Elpis. When the essence of negativity is released, it will plague a single target for several minutes, affecting the target differently depending on which negative spirit it represents. Children of Elpis can choose only one essence of negativity to summon at a time and will feel moderately drained afterward.

  1. The essence of disease (representing the Nosoi) causes the target to feel sickly and nauseated once released. The target may develop a fever and shiver uncomfortably, and their limbs may feel weaker than normal due to illness. In rare cases, the target may spread the disease to their nearby allies, causing them to experience similar symptoms.
  2. The essence of pain (representing Achos) causes the target to feel sharp, stinging pain across their entire body once released. The target may develop headaches, and they will experience greater pain when moving or being hit.
  3. The essence of hunger (representing Limos) causes the target to feel a deep, insatiable hunger--like someone who hasn't eaten in a week--once released. The target may be distracted by the severity of their hunger during combat and will feel much less energetic than usual.
  4. The essence of despair (representing Oizys) causes the target to feel hopeless and distressed once released. Though they experience no physical discomfort, the severity of their mental pain will be strong enough to distract them during combat. Thrown into the depths of despair, they may be overwhelmed by anxiety and will have difficulty summoning the motivation to keep fighting.
  5. The essence of insanity (representing Mania) causes the target to have difficulty thinking rationally once released. The target may make abrupt, uncontrollable movements and may mutter nonsensically or laugh crazily. They will have little to no sense of self-preservation for the duration they are targeted.
  6. The essence of old age (representing Geras) causes the target to feel decades older once released. The target may have much lower energy than usual and will have aching joints that noticeably slow down their movement and reaction speed.

9 Months After Character is Made[]

Children of Elpis can draw power from all the hopeful actions or environments they’ve witnessed, committed, or visited in their lives in order to become an embodiment of pure hope. This would make them more powerful and immune to all attacks, enhancing both their physical prowess and power over hope. In this state they retain access to their other powers, enabling them to fly freely using their golden wings, to passively radiate hope among their surroundings, etc. This only lasts for a short time, after which the user will be extremely exhausted and unable to use this ability for at least a day. However, the more frequently children of Elpis use this ability, the more hope they will have experienced in their lives, so later uses of this ability will be progressively stronger than the first.

Traits[]

  1. Children of Elpis tend to have inspirational, uplifting personalities.
  2. Children of Elpis tend to make natural-born leaders, revolutionaries, and motivational speakers.
  3. Children of Elpis tend to be highly driven to make their hopes and dreams come true.
  4. Children of Elpis tend to have good mental and physical health.
