  • History

Ava Anis was 23 when she met Hermes. She was a Flight Attendant for American Airlines. He fell in love with her and disguised himself as a handsome passenger. She fell in love with him, and soon Sadie was born. Sometime during, Hermes revealed that he was a god and that he couldn’t be with them forever. Thankfully, Ava took the news well, and she continued her job as an Flight Attendant. Whenever she was gone, Sadie would stay with her grandparents in NYC. Sadie never knew her dad. She didn’t remember what he was like, because her mother said he had left before she was born. Sadie was always told that her father loved her and that he had had to leave, but she would meet him one day. The only thing she had from him two bronze rings, that she wore around her neck on a string, because they were to big for her. Then one day, when Sadie was 3, the plane that Ava was in crashed, and there were no survivors. It was in the news, but know one knew the cause. They believed it was something with the engine, but the plane was so broken up, it was hard to tell. Sadie moved in with an aunt, uncle, and a cousin in NYC. Sadie was cared for, but she was lonely. Her relatives were kind, but they were a lot different than her. They were all strawberry blonde with hazel eyes. They were all very timid and never wanted to do anything dangerous. Sadie was the opposite. Sometimes she would see strange blobs following her. She would always ignore them until they became to close, and then she would run and hide. One time she saw a snake lady Dracanae in the library. She ran before it could see her, but she knew she wouldn’t always be so lucky. Another time when she was 10, she was walking home from school, she heard deep canine growling from the bushes. She reached into her backpack and brought out a heavy curriculum book. She gripped it tightly and peered into the shrubbery. Her eyes met big red ones with slit pupils. It gave off a loud howl and sprang from the bushes. It was a hellhound the size of a rhino, with lava-red eyes and fangs like daggers. Sadie swung her book at it, but it just caught it in its mouth and shredded it to pieces with its teeth. “Oh well,” she thought, “I guess that means I don’t have to turn in my homework”. The hellhound turned and swiped at Sadie, grazing her arm with its razor-sharp claws. Sadie stumbled back and tripped on a root. She fell and slammed her head on the base of the tree, and her eye sight turned fuzzy. The hellhound leaped toward her. Suddenly, she felt the rings around her neck get unbearably hot. They flashed a bright white and almost blinded Sadie. She pulled the rings off and felt them suddenly change in her hand into two sharp knifes. She gripped one in each hand and brought them up to her face, just in time to catch the hound before it bit her head off. She could feel its hot breath on her face, its teeth only inches from her face. It gave one last howl before crumpling to the ground and melting into shadow, soaking into the ground until it disappeared. That was Sadie’s first experience killing a monster. It wouldn’t be her last.

When Sadie was 12, they had a family thanksgiving in their apartment, like they did every year. The apartment was small and stuffed with people, and Sadie was getting tired of answering questions and staying on her best behavior. She ran up to her room and flopped on her bed. From beneath her pillow she pulled out a book of Greek myths. She normally was never reading, there were always more important things to be done;hanging out with her friends, pulling pranks, eating, etc. Recently though, she’d been spending more time reading, because she was doing some research. She had recently realized that some of the monsters she had seen were in Greek Myths. She had started getting books from the school library, and reading about the monsters. Now she flipped open the book to a random page. The first thing that caught her eye was a big humanoid figure with one eye, that was drawn so well, it looked quite real. At the top of the page was the name Cyclops. She said it carefully, almost whispering the name, while staring deep into the brown eye drawn so expertly on the page. It made her shiver. “Sadie!” she heard her aunt call, “Please come downstairs, I need you to get something.” Sadie ran downstairs, leaving the book open on her bed. When she gets downstairs, her aunt tells her that they need to borrow something from their neighbor across the street, and she needs Sadie to go ask for it. Sadie goes through the small park separating the two rows of houses, and gets what is needed. As Sadie is coming back from the neighbors house, she hears a rumble and crash. She looks and sees that where her house was was now a pile of rubble. Looming behind was a hideous face with one eye. “Cyclops” she whispered. She hears sirens in the distance, and she turnes and runs, tears bluring her eyesight. All her family is dead. She has no one left all she knows is that she cannot be responsible for more deaths. She would go into foster care, but she knows she’s the reason all her family died. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone else.

Instead, she decides to live on the streets of Manhattan, alone, where no one else would get hurt because of her. She sleeps in alleys and abandoned buildings, but never staying in one place to long, because the monsters would soon find her. She steals food and takes it from dumpsters behind restaurants. Her house’s collapse was in the news, but they blamed it on weakening structure and a gas leak. About the family, it said that there were no survivors that they could tell, and though not all the bodies had been found, it was doubtful that they would find any more, for a fire had started almost immediately after it collapsed. The reporter said “A great tragedy, and we will be looking into the structural soundness of other houses on the street”.

Sadie lives in the streets for two years, during which she fights many monsters, including Fire-Breathing Horses, Stymphalian Birds, and Teleknines. Then one day, at age 14, after a particularly exsausting battle with some Harpies, she hears a battle coming from a abandoned wearhouse and investigates. It’s a satyr, and it’s fighting a giant Scorpion. The satyr is loosing the battle. It is injured, and the scorpion comes in for the kill. Sadie jumps down and fights the scorpion. She is good at fighting monsters because of all her experience on the streets. She blocked its tail with her blades, and then slices it’s tail off. It runs toward her with its mandibles clicking, and Sadie dodges, before slicing its head off. The monster disintegrates into dust, and Sadie runs over to the satyr. She bandages his wounds and he takes her to camp. There all is explained to her. She is claimed and becomes a member of the Hermes cabin.

Comments[]

Hi! Let me know if there are problems or if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Just write them here! This is your space! Use it!

  • Unfortunately, Hermes wouldn't be able to visit Sadie after her birth due to Zeus' direct interference rule.
  • Is there a reason that the Scythian Dracanae and the dark blobs (which I assume are also monsters) didn't attack Sadie? It's usually the case that if Sadie can see a monster, they'd be able to pick up her scent (that is, unless she was much younger).
  • Sadly, glass can't kill a monster; only metals like Celestial Bronze and Stygian Iron would be able to. (Also, on a similar note, how was she able to kill the monster the satyr was fighting if she didn't have a weapon?)
  • To clarify things, did the cyclopes intentionally target the house even though Sadie wasn't inside or was it accidental? Also, what happened afterwards? Did she escape from it or did she kill it?
  • Could you very briefly touch on how Sadie was able to survive on the streets on her own for two years? I.e. how come she was never taken into foster care by authorities, how she survived without any money, etc.
  • We recommend against mentioning any of the canon characters since our wiki takes place 20+ years after the end of the books. So, we assume that the canon characters have moved on and gone their separate ways.

Hi! Thank you for leaving a comment! I was a bit lost and wondering if someone would contact me about how it was going. Thanks for you input. Since you were so helpful, I was wondering if you could help me with some questions. Thanks! Ok, here we go.

  • Ok, so your first concern was about Hermes dropping by. I wanted to show that he still cared about them, but I understand about Zeus’s rule. I think I fixed that point, but let me know if it still needs work or how it’s going.
  • Well, I wanted to show that her younger life wasn’t entirely monster-free, but I didn’t want to have to take the time to explain and describe the battles. I changed that bit, so is it good now?
  • Lol, stupid me, I totally forgot about that. I’m a big fan or PJ, so I feel like I should have remembered, but I think I was too wrapped up in my character to think about it. Thanks so much for letting me know. I can have her get the rings before the hellhound battle, but then that leaves us with the question of how she got them. For her weapons, do you think she should just have them from birth, or is given them in some sort of Hermes prompted encounter, (like in a moment of peril, the hellhound fight for instance, them to be whisked into her hand from the wind and she hears a voice saying, “avenge me”, “fight this battle”, etc.) Or she could just steal her rings. That too. 😉 Let me know, and I’ll hopefully be getting to that soon.
  • My original idea was that the cyclops targeted the house intentionally, and that it was in the area and felt her speak it’s name, so it came. I can always change it if you think that doesn’t make sense.
  • Sure. I haven’t really gotten to that yet, and as I said at the top, that was a summary. I will definitely touch on that. Thanks!
  • Oh, sorry. Are you talking about Grover? I understand, that part is to help me with my writing. It’s not supposed to be part of her story. Hopefully soon I will be done with Sadie’s Page, and that will be deleted. Sorry for confusing!

Alright, that was all your concerns, but I’ve had someone else contact me with questions. I tried to fix them, but that left me with some problems.

  • The person asked if the hound was a Hellhound. Ok, so yes, the hound was a hellhound, but since Sadie didn’t know what one was, I wasn’t sure if I should name it or not. I could either put it in parenthesis, or I could just name it. What do you think?
  • Age. They said that 15 is too old to get to CHB. Ok, I’m fine if she’s younger when she gets there, I just read that most Roleplay people are between the ages of 15 and 21. Is the age they get to camp different then the age they are now? I can change it easily, and have her be 10 when the house blows up, so then 13 when she gets to camp.
  • They said the hydra would be to hard. I changed it for the moment, but do you have any suggestions? If I make it to easy, it will seem strange that the satyr died fighting it, if it was not very dangerous.
  • They weren’t sure if she could get to camp herself. They suggested another satyr find her and take her to camp. So, I guess that makes sense. The only reason I was hesitant to have someone take her to camp is then that then most likely she would become friends with them. That makes sense, but since I would have created the character, it’s not like she could Roleplay with it, since I created it. The satyr would have to get more halfbloods, but she might still see him every now and then. If I created him though, then they couldn’t interact. How would that work? I don’t think she would forget about who brought her to camp. How should I do this?
  • Also, I wanted to add, I had the satyr turn into a plant for ease of carrying and for reasons above. ^ When I went to the books though, it looked like Grover had to say a blessing to reincarnate him. (I have the quote on this page.) So, in that case she most likely wouldn’t know the blessing, so he would remain a dead satyr. How should I do this? I suppose it’s all connected to if she goes to camp by herself or not. I need a LOT of help to get this claim done. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks! You’ve been so nice to all new users, I’m honored to be one that gets to interact with you. Yours forever, Samirah ara (talk) 01:26, June 1, 2019 (UTC)Samirah ara ❤️❤️❤️

Things mostly check out here. There's a bit of a jarring shift from past to present tense near the end there, but we don't really weigh grammar that heavily anyway so don't worry about that if you don't want to. The only thing I'd like to bring up is the question about her age - I'm not sure exactly who you talked to or what they said about it, but there's no maximum age limit for coming to camp. She can arrive when she's fifteen. If another claimworker wants to disagree with me on that I'd love to do battle with them, heh.

That said though, what there is a rule about is how long a character "has already been" at camp canonically - no more than two weeks. Normally the age they are now and the age they arrived are assumed to be the same unless implied otherwise in their history, because most people rp their character's first day as happening the day irl that their claim is approved. As written right now, Sadie is one of outliers - her history mentions she arrived when she was thirteen, and is fifteen now (ie she's already been at camp for two years now).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume the discrepancy there was because someone else give you some misleading information? Probably along the lines of "the gods swore on the Styx to claim all their kids by age thirteen so she can't arrive when she's fifteen"? If that's the case... just ignore that. It's already canon that the gods immediately ignored that oath with seemingly no consequences. Here on the wiki we mostly just ignore that rule. She can be whatever age you want. Change her age so it's not implied she's already been at camp for a while (by making her meet the satyr at 15, or changing her current age to 13, whichever you want) and I'll approve the claim ASAP.

Followup: yep, I just noticed that message on your talk page from ToxicPersephone saying that 15 is too old to arrive at camp. Yeah, that's wrong. Just disregard that. Wiki policy is no characters younger than nine, but other than that any age is acceptable. The only reason there weren't many demigods older than ~20 in the books was because... well, because demigods usually die before then. We have no hard limit on how old they can be. Ah sorry, I honestly forgot I hadn't already claimed this! Everything checks out, and sorry for all the delays!

You Have Been Claimed

This claim has been approved as a child of Hermes. You now need to make a page for them and a word bubble, if you aren't sure how to do this you can see the guide here. Once you have done that you can add your character's name to the cabin list located on the cabin pages and start role playing with your new character. If you have any questions feel free to ask a member of the Admin team.
