About a year before Conley was born Katey Miller, the daughter of Elpis, caught the eye of Hephaestus. Katey was a volcanist because she always had hope that the volcano wouldn't erupt, which it never did. Hephaestus appeared and took Katey into the nearby island that was next to the volcano she was studying. Hephaestus said that Katey will have a child and if she wanted him to live pass two, she would have to name him Conley, so he would always stay pure. He also told her that he will always battle a depressive disorder but will never be suicidal.
After giving birth to Conly, Katey went to the volcano where she met Hephaestus by herself but the volcano erupted. Now an orphan, Conley, who was not even able to walk, was put into the system. Within a year of being in the system he went from house to house every week finally a older demigod, about 54, picked him up and adopted him. Her name was Ella Staity, daughter of Athena. She taught him how to fight with a damascus, starting with a wooden version then a real one then a magical one.
On Conley's 13th birthday he was sent to a place called Camp Half-Blood. He was told to pack his magical damascus, some clothes, toiletries, and some ambrosia and nectar. And so he did and set off. Ella had told him about monsters so about 3/4 of the way there he said that he must be lucky since no monsters were attacking him. Immediately after he said that a couple of telkhines attacked him. They surrounded him, making a semicircle around him. The telkhines started closing in and started talking about how good he would taste and starting licking their jaws. Conley, knowing hat monsters don't like celestial bronze pulled out his damascus. Quickly all of them of the turned into some yellow powder. I know very anticlimactic fight.

Children of Hephaestus have the ability to create and control fire; however, it is extremely chaotic and will burn anything near it no matter the intention of the child of Hephaestus. They can shoot fireballs, streams of fire and coat weapons in flame. The more fire summoned and controlled, the more energy is drained. Children of Hephaestus are innately stronger and faster than other Children of Hephaestus are able to create a wall of stone, no larger than 2 to 3 times the size of the user, to temporarily block attacks
