Jamie is a true free spirit. Having grown up in a very friendly neighbourhood and environment, he's managed to blossom into a quite outgoing, funny and lively young man. While not completely fearless in every extent of the word, he definitely is someone to speak his mind and be himself without needing other people's validation. Outspoken, opinionated, and wild, it is truly a feat for someone to get bored around Jamie. He has a bright smile slapped onto his face most of the time and he loves sharing joy with others, whether it may be by simply giving encouraging words, being witty and cracking a joke or two, or even making a fool of himself.
Added to this playful nature, there's his need for affection, making him touchy even in inappropriate situations, which is also in part due to his lacklustre ability on reading social cues. Granted, he isn't very street smart, and he is quite dorky or awkward when he admires someone, but his passion to learn more and more makes him always have some random piece of information handy that can sometimes get him out of trouble.
The son of Aeolus adores living life at its fullest, and he's one to never stop experimenting, discovering, and finding out about new things. A bit restless at instances, Jamie has a hard time staying still and is resistant to following orders, though not always rebellious. It is his prime fascination to chase thrills and adrenaline, sometimes border lining on reckless and stupid, but he genuinely believes that it's better to die young having lived a life worth living than dying old and not having lived at all. Perhaps both this and his naïveté (which stems out from having a really big heart and a hard time seeing the worst in others and being too trusting) are his biggest flaws.
Perhaps what Jan De Vries liked the most about his hometown was that almost every evening he could witness the magnificent hues that tainted the skies during the blue hour. Everything seemed to be so quiet and peaceful. Some people were riding their bicycles back home from work, and others were walking around downtown to grab a late cup of coffee with their loved ones. The only thing that seemed to be constant was the frigid blow of the wind, even during the summers.
Having grown as the son of many generations of fishermen, he’d been taught well since his infancy that the skies and the sea were not to be toyed with. They hadn’t been particularly poor, but sometimes, when the open sea seemed to have a grudge against them, they would have no catch of the day, and they’d have to go back home with their pockets empty and their stomachs growling. Funnily enough, the wind was always strong against the sails, always kind when the waters were rancorous. And so, it had been that Jan had begun to secretly be grateful with the wind.
It had started out as an innocent idea of a hopeful infant, but despite him growing in height and maturing into a young man, his gratitude failed to quaver. Jan was exceptionally intelligent, and his parents, despite not always having the means to support his talents, did their best to encourage his education. By the time he was finishing his adolescence, he’d decided that his career of choice would be aerodynamic design and engineering, particularly in cars.
Being as bright as he was, he received a fully-paid scholarship from a world-renowned institution in the United Kingdom, and with the money his parents had managed to save throughout the years, he afforded renting a small flat alongside three other students. He’d learned English as a child, but living and learning among Englishmen really perfected his language skills.
There were lots of physics formulas regarding heat, speed, direction and whatnot regarding the wind, but somehow, Jan had been gifted with an innate understanding of its flow, of its movements, and paired up with his mental abilities, he outmatched his fellow peers time after time after time. By the time he finished university, he’d graduated with honours and was scouted to work in one of the leading Formula One racing teams as part of the race car designing team with the promise of evidently earning Loya of money.
He accepted the offer and season after season, Jan always delivered the best and most effective designs, and when it was time for the races, the cars responded magnificently, earning the team the world’s championship three years in a row; feat that was unprecedented for the team. Now an adult, he’d never bring himself to say it out loud, but he was certain that the wind was still blessing him.
Aeolus had obviously noticed the man years ago, but what had started as amusement developed into genuine interest. Even he was surprised to witness how Jan understood and almost felt the winds so clearly as a mere mortal. With his interest piqued, he passed himself as a British designer of the rival scuderia’s car design team, and he’d purposefully stumble with Jan to start teasing him and provoking him. Luckily, Jan was a lighthearted and affable man that took the other’s attitude grandly and they soon became friends.
Jan couldn’t explain how James (as Aeolus had introduced himself) would be in one race, but not in the next, and then appear again in the one after that, but he never paid it much mind. Their intermittent and sporadical friendship blossomed until at the night of the end of the ongoing championship, Jan’s scuderia won for the fourth time in a row despite Aeolus’ playful and discrete attempts at hindering said team’s winning car. The idea of being unknowingly challenged and defeated, if only at a mortal level, aroused him to a great extent, and instead of taking Jan to a bar and buying him a complimentary round of drinks as the winner would to the loser on a normal race day, Aeolus seduced Jan and insisted on spending the night together. Jan, having harboured feelings for the other long since that fateful night, didn’t even bother to give it a second thought and consider the possible implications, and just brought James to his quarters to share a night of love and passion.
At dawn, Jan found that James been long gone, but he figured that the two would see each other again at the start of the following season. They didn’t. He tried reaching out, but he couldn’t contact him. He asked around, but no one ever seemed to notice. He even entertained the thought of having imagined it all from the beginning, finding no other logical explanation to it.
That was until he received the only signal that he could have that it all had been true. A signal in the shape of a beautiful baby boy and a letter back home during the off-season. It was from James, and in the letter he explained absolutely everything, from his initial interest to his true heritage, to who the baby was: their son. He explained everything with such detail and such knowledge of Jan’s unorthodox relationship with the wind that despite being a man of reasoning and science, he had to believe. He named their son James, after Aeolus’s pseudonym, hoping to always relive a vestige of their short-lived infatuation whenever he saw their child.
Throughout his years at the Formula One, Jan had sent most of his earnings to his parents so they were much more accommodated by the time that Jamie arrived to the lives of the De Vries family. Jan’s parents, having suspected all of their lives that Jan was homosexual, didn’t bother to ask how the baby had come to be; they were just ecstatic to have a grandson.
In order to maintain their now-luxurious lifestyle, Jan continued in his job, which meant that his parents practically raised Jamie, and, at least for the first years of his life, he was an absent father. No one really had a problem with the situation and in fact, Jamie had a very privileged childhood, though his grandparents, having lived day-to-day for a long time, managed to keep Jamie humble and down-to-earth in spite of their newfound wealth.
He grew up in a very accepting and nurturing environment with access to high education that encouraged everyone to have an open mind and critical judgement. This helped Jamie feel free to be himself all the time, rarely ever feeling self-conscious, which encouraged him to follow his desires, thus, he enrolled in various types of dancing classes. Jan would at least try contacting his son on a daily basis, so it wasn’t until his pre-pubescent years that he really started feeling his father’s absence.
Whether lucky or unlucky in regards to this situation, Jamie’s grandparents died while on a trip to commemorate their 50th anniversary, and so, Jan had to quit his prestigious job to go back home and continue raising his son. It was around that time that he experienced his first monster attack. He was 11, and walking back home from school when a harpy came out of nowhere and tried attacking the young boy with her talons.
Terrified, Jamie ran for his life not really noticing where he was going and tried losing the monster, but it was unrelenting and he tripped onto the rails of an oncoming metro. Just in time, as the harpy swooped in for the kill, he managed to bring himself over to the opposite platform and the vehicle ran at a terrifying speed over the place where he’d been just a few seconds ago, effectively smashing the monster by the front at full speed.
Afraid that his father wouldn’t believe him, Jamie failed to mention any of this and it wasn’t until his second monster attack a long time afterwards with a hellhound, that a satyr offered his help to exterminate the hellish dog and proceeded to gift the demigod with a pair of Celestial Bronze Sai so he could defend himself. This time around, what he’d witnessed had been to crazy to deny and he ended up fessing up to Jan. His father obviously comprehended the situation and explained Jamie almost everything as best as he could.
Jamie continued growing up and tried learning more about his powers and how to control them but it was difficult without any proper guidance. At least he managed to control the air around him to mask his scent for short amounts of time and continued training his body; if not versing it in proper fighting techniques, at least with the strength and grace that came naturally with dancing.
As the years, and diverse monster attacks passed, though, his scent grew thicker, and what once were sporadical attacks, came to be a rather frequent, and ever-increasing-in-danger occurrence. It wasn’t until he was almost killed by a large flock of Stymphalian birds that Jan did his part of confessing that he was privy to the existence of a camp for demigod’s across the Atlantic Ocean in New York.
With his heart shattered to see his son go away, but his mind insisting him that it was the right and sane thing to do, he paid for a one-way airplane ticket to New York, looked at the evening sky's tone deepening into that signature blue that he'd always adored as the plane took off and once again, Jan de Vries entrusted his absolute everything to the wind. To James. To Aeolus; in each and every way he’d come to meet him as throughout his life. Luckily, the wind had never failed him, and deep in heart he knew it never would.
Powers of a Child of Aeolus:
Offensive[]
- Children of Aeolus have the ability to create a small tornado, about the size of the user, which can be sent across short distances to knock opponents off their feet or used to send small debris flying at opponents.
- Children of Aeolus are able to use air itself to slice objects, focusing a current of wind to the point where it takes on a sharp edge, which the caster launches at foes. Although this attack does usually slashing damage, some users are able to focus it into single piercing stab like a bullet.
Defensive[]
- Children of Aeolus have the ability to create a dome shaped torrent of wind, roughly two or three times the size of the user, which can be used to block attacks for a very short time.
- Children of Aeolus have the ability to create powerful gusts of wind, however, the stronger the gust, the more it drains them. The gusts can be used to block incoming attacks.
Passive[]
- Children of Aeolus feel stronger when they are touched by strong winds they did not create.
- Children of Aeolus are innately able to lower air resistance and move faster on the ground, granting them an enhanced level of speed.
- Children of Aeolus can contain more air in their lungs than the average human, allowing them to survive longer when they cannot gather oxygen.
Supplementary[]
- Children of Aeolus have the ability to hover or fly, however, the longer they fly the more it drains them. Due to their rare ability to lower air resistance, users are able to fly faster than anyone else with the ability to fly.
- Children of Aeolus have the ability to call upon the winds to speed their movements or attacks; conversely this can also be used to slow the movements or attacks of others.
- Children of Aeolus can use the wind to either surround themselves to block enemies and projectiles or to surround an enemy trapping them within the winds. The longer they maintain the wind, the more it drains.
- Children of Aeolus can curse an opponent by draining some of the air from an opponent’s lungs and make it somewhat hard for them to breathe for a short time. This leaves them vulnerable to attack or giving the user a chance to flee.
3 Months After Character is Made[]
- Children of Aeolus can create a massive tornado, about five times the size of the user, which can be used to violently assault others with strong winds and debris.
6 Months After Character is Made[]
- Children of Aeolus can turn the air into tools, objects, weapons and other items, create semi-living constructs and/or create structures/buildings of varying permanence; however, only up to 3 combative/non-combative items or 1 semi-living construct can be conjured at a time and it cannot be larger than roughly 3 times the size of the one that conjured it. The longer they maintain combative/non combative items and semi-living constructs, the more it drains their energy, so they are more limited for the time they can keep these things cohesive.
9 Months After Character is Made[]
- Children of Aeolus can shed their flesh and turn into pure wind, while in this state they are immune to attacks, can fly even faster than before and receive enhancements in their existing aerokinetic abilities. Once the transformation subsides, they are extremely exhausted. Barely able to move and could possibly faint.
Traits[]
- Children of Aeolus are known to grow up to be amazing meteorologists, as they know all the current weather going on in a certain area.
- Children of Aeolus typically enjoy flying and high places, enabling them to become astounding pilots and hot air ballooners.
- Children of Aeolus are often claustrophobic when in tight places or underground.
- Since their father presides the four directional wind gods, children of Aeolus have what could be described as a mental compass. Able to tell where the four main directions are most of the time.
