Marcel Noe was an acclaimed model in France, Belgium and Germany and often travelled between the three countries for multiple photoshoots. It was in two of these countries that he met two different goddesses - Hebe and Nyx. In Berlin, Marcel met Nyx who was infatuated with him. Eventually, the two had a love affair which resulted in Nyx not getting pregnant, but rather Marcel promising her he'd see her again in Berlin and then they could conceive a child.
Sadly for Nyx, sometime later in the year, Marcel met Hebe in Paris and felt stronger emotions than he did for Nyx. Again, a love affair happened but a child was conceived and two weeks later Hebe was handing over a baby boy to the mid-20's model. Naming the son Joël, Marcel was oblivious to the wrath of Nyx which he son would experience. Upon hearing of the news of the birth of such a child, Nyx cursed him so that in the dark, he'd always feel like there was a large, dark figured that loomed over him. As well as this, unless with a significant light source, he'd hear whispering with no words.
Completely unaware of his son's connotations, Marcel decided to settle in Paris while marrying another acclaimed model, Marcine Ivorie, and working on his family life. While in his infant stages, Joël's curse was regarded as being normal for a baby - he was just always hungry, tired, needed to be changed and the likes. Marcel never took much of a notice to it, neither did Marcine, despite both advocating that spirits existed. Although they thought nothing of it, their attention would be shifted when Marcine gave birth to twins, Fernande and Alceste. Then what was a cry for food or being changed became seeking attention and more and more Joël would be told to be quiet and get on with it.
That was Joël's childhood - nothing more, nothing less. Little sympathy was given to him by anyone. I mean, when people saw him crying when he was 8 or 9 believed he was being spoilt, being a brat. Nobody knew - not even Joël, yet whenever he tried to tell people he could see a shadow or could hear whispering nobody took much notice and told him to stop seeking attention and grow up.
Not even when he had his first monster attack was any attention given. It was a night when he was set to look after his younger siblings on his own. Yep, at only 13 years of age Joël was looking after his siblings. Albeit his parents went to a restaurant that was near his home it was still far enough for any danger to be posed to the children to be effective. As he finished from putting his younger siblings to sleep, Joël was attacked by a harpy. He doesn't remember much of the attack - just him running through the house and trying to hide from the monster. He doesn't remember how he ended up in the hospital and not in the Fields of Asphodel. In reality, a local demigod who was expecting his own son to experience his monster attack had been walking around the neighbourhood and, upon seeing the monster, proceeded to attack it - unfortunately only after it took a strike at Joël.
Well, after the monster attack Joël's perception of being a cry baby was bigger than ever - many people assumed he was mad and his father promptly removed him from public school and forbid him from leaving the house. Imagine a madwoman in the attic situation. Sub-consequently, his curse effected him more and more until he had to be with somebody at all times and never ever close his eyes which proved easier said than done.
For the next five years until he was 18, Joël remained locked away - his mentality becoming less and less sane as each monster attack happened. You see, the monsters had difficulty getting inside without injuring them somehow; Joël's father had put many defence mechanisms on all entrances to ensure that his son wouldn't escape. Despite the injuries, many monsters persisted until they were within attacking range of Joël to which they were met by a satyr that always seemed to wander in at the right time. All of the sounds he heard messed Joël up mentally until, when he was 18, he couldn't handle it any more and asked the satyr to tell him of a place he could go. The satyr mentioned of a Camp in America and well, Joël promptly ran away and left without looking back.
