River is an extremely shy individual, given what's happened to him in his life. He is very selective with who he talks to and, from there, he's even more selective as to who he trusts. Subsequently, the amount of people he trusts anything with is extremely small. He's rarely sociable and is more of a homebody, preferring his own room to anywhere else in the world. He's known to be restless until he feels completely safe and, even then, has been seen looking around to ensure that the safety he feels isn't false and is genuine. WIP
Emily Kang was a shy senior of college when she met Apollo. She majored in music and it was in a class that the two met. She herself was a child of Themis but has chosen the musical route due to an insatiable love for tunes and melodies. Apollo never hid who he was and before long, Emily was pregnant with a baby boy. She knew why Apollo had to leave and she never resented him for it. No, instead she promised that she'd raise their son to the best of her abilities and to make sure that she'd deliver him to Camp as soon as she could. Nine months later, a baby boy was born who she named River.
River and Emily were a good duo. Whilst she didn't particularly love the life of a single mother, she adored River and always put her before himself. She was saved by the cycle of low income when she met a business man, Joseph Myung, and fell in love. He seemed to adore River just as much as she did and, for Emily, that was the main thing. Before long the two families, for Joseph had a son of his own, became one and seemed to be perfect.
And, for a few years, they were perfect. River was doted on by his elder step-brother Zander and flourished at school. He clicked with a boy his age, Cian, and became near enough inseparable from him. Things went well until he was roughly eight years old. That's when things began to change. The doting step-father role that Joseph had played so well seemed to vanish and, in it's place, was a man who was resentful that Emily would still side with River than him. Joseph took his frustrations out on River both verbally and physically. It was the emotional abuse that got to River, really. He could brush off the words and he could always hide the bruises or say he fell over and blame it on his eight-year-old curiousness, but the emotional torment he had to deal with broke his tiny heart. He was told that his mother didn't love him, not really, and that he was a freak child, a spur of the moment that ruined her life. He never told Emily any of this, not until he was much older and that hindered him. It meant he'd carry the emotional baggage for a long time.
It was when he was thirteen that River's life really started to go downhill. His mother still doted on him, his step-father still made his life a living hell and his older step-brother had vanished down into America. River felt alone, afraid to tell anyone. But he told someone. He worked up the courage after his thirteenth birthday to tell his mother of what was happening to him. He showed her the bruises, told her what was said to him and truly let her know what the man she loved was doing to him. It turned Emily's emotions on Joseph one-eighty. She promised River they'd move out and that they'd live happily together and he believed her. He truly believed her. It was what got him through Joseph's onslaught of abuse. He believed her right until she took her dying breath protecting him from a hellhound that overpowered him and then her. River still believed that she'd take him away as she died in his arms. He still believed her when Joseph emerged to see his wife dead in his stepson's arms, causing him to threaten to truly kill River. And the sad thing? River was ready for it, almost. He was in that much despair that he was fine with it. He saved, though. Saved by his stepbrother that hadn't been a stranger to what his father was doing to the younger. No, Zander came back and saved River and fulfilled the promise Emily never got to fulfil; taking River away.
He rook River to Los Angeles and placed him in the care of some of his own demigod friends who trained River, providing him with the basics of protecting himself. River thrived under them with the drive to survive on for his mother. He still kept in contact with Cian - the only constant in his life and it was a combination of living for his mother and the familiarity of being in correspondence with his best friend that enabled River to get through the various attacks he faced over the years before coming to camp.
