The harpies were the spirits of sudden, sharp gusts of wind. They were known as the hounds of Zeus and were despatched by the god to snatch away (harpazô) people and things from the earth. Sudden, mysterious disappearances were often attributed to the Harpyiai. The Harpies were once sent by Zeus to plague King Phineus of Thrake as punishment for revealing the secrets of the gods. Whenever a plate of food was set before him, the Harpies would swoop down and snatch it away, befouling any scraps left behind.
One specific breed of Harpies (commonly employed by Camp Half-Blood) have shorter wings and fly much slower than normal Harpies.
The Harpies were depicted as winged women, sometimes with ugly faces, and/or with the lower bodies of birds.
A single Harpie can easily be killed by a Demigod who has been trained by mortals to wield a weapon. (The more harpies there are, the harder it becomes to manage fighting them, as they swarm like hives of attacking bees/birds). Harpies are best defeated with stabs and arrow wounds to the midsection or torso, via use of: Swords, arrows/bows, spears. They are, however, much harder to deal with when using daggers or other weapons which use range is like that of hand to hand combat: Daggers, kitchen knives, metal shards, etc.
Harpies differ in strength, some have talons like birds, while others hands with razor sharp claws on them. These claws and talons can easily cut through flesh, they have a harder time cutting things that are covered in armor that provide more protection than leather armor. The Harpies can fly quickly, however being much larger than birds, they are affected by strong wind currents.
Harpies are not usually covered by any armor plating, and their skin is only a bit thicker than humans skin. If their wings are disabled many of their strategies are useless; however these beasts will fight like a feral beast and crawl on the ground when this happens. Harpies are weak weak to extreme temperatures, being crushed by heavy objects, or run hit with heavy objects at high speeds (like being run over by a semi-truck or multiple cars).
They can fly and they use their claws in combination with this. They will fly low and rake with their claws before they fly up so you cannot hit them. Another popular tactic is swooping down and lifting enemies into the air and dropping them from high heights.
