Ulysses is first and foremost an academic, with his primary loves being history and literature. From the moment he could hold a book by himself, he read up on every topic under the sun but his favorite books were about the heroes of Ancient Greece. Nothing makes Ulysses happier than a day all to himself so he can read to his heart’s content. One of his biggest goals in life is to become either a world-famous historian or a successful fantasy author. Books and historical documentaries are the easiest way to make him putty in anyone’s hands. That isn’t to say he doesn’t have other passions as well, Ulysses has a strong fondness for the arts in all of the ways they come. When he’s not reading, or writing, a book some of his hobbies include sculpting, music, or doing theatre. Ulysses can also be incredibly shy when around most people, and would much rather be alone than at an event with a bunch of people. He’s the kind of person who never wanted to celebrate his own birthday party because of the fuss it would cause. In fact, most of what he writes he keeps to himself out of fear of rejection. He is the kind of person to try and carry the world on his shoulders if he could. He would rather keep everything inside of him than make anyone else upset.
It was 18 years ago when Clio began to seriously worry about her existence, and what the future would hold for her. Like her other sisters, she had planned to have a child to someday carry her torch for her in a time of need. The only issue was how she would find the right mortal to have a child with. It wasn’t just a matter of securing her domain, but also a need to have a child with someone who could nurture and appreciate her child. Eventually, she stumbled upon Ernest Bellrose, an English professor living in Charleston South Carolina on sabbatical. Ernest was everything Clio wanted in a lover and as a future father. He was caring, a little eccentric, and fascinated with historical literature. One day while Ernest was visiting the library for some research material on civil-war era poetry. Clio disguised herself as a librarian and offered to help Ernest find all the materials he needed, as anything historical was her specialty. The two at first kept everything professional, but as the flirting became more apparent research partners soon became dinner partners. As these situations often end, Clio eventually made her way back to Olympus not before leaving behind a baby Ulysses for Ernest to take care of. Accompanying the baby, was a very detailed letter with not only an explanation of the Greek God business but also strongly worded instructions on how to raise Ulysses based on the best historical techniques. Even with the instructions given, Ernest had no idea how to keep a demigod child safe all the time, and for the first few months, he struggled to take care of Ulysses at all. By the time his sabbatical was over with, he had no other choice but to hunt down the woman who had practically raised him while his parents were out on archeological dig sites. Thankfully, Henrietta Dupart was more than willing to help the Bellerose family in any way she could. However, that wasn’t the only reason why she went to help raise Ulysess. Unbeknownst to Ernest, Henrietta was also a demigod child of Hecate, and a descendent of the famous voodoo queen Marie Laveau. She could tell there was something special about Ulysses and that he would need as much protection growing up as he could possibly get. Growing up, Ulysses was a sheltered child who didn’t have many friends in school. Part of it was due to Ernest and Henrietta, but another part of it was due to Ulysses’ own reserved personality. It took him almost a month before he made his first friend in first grade. Ulysses met Bryce on the swings during recess one day, the two of them didn’t really have anyone else to play with so they just swung in silence. Eventually, the two matched pace and moved in sync for the rest of recess. Bryce laughed to himself, which made Ulysses more anxious than hed ever been. When he finally mustered the courage to ask, the answer Bryce gave surprised him. “It means we’re marwied now!” Bryce said with a smile. Ulysses smiled back and the two of them were best of friends after that moment. The two of them did a lot together, and Ulysses started to call Bryce’s mom Aunt Mal after awhile. The two of them even had a plan to set up Mal and Ernest together since they were both single and they had just finished watching the parent trap on repeat all summer. For a while, everything seemed to be going really well. Ulysses would make his way to Bryce’s house so they could hang out and then walk back to Ulysses’ so they could have campouts in his backyard. At first, Henrietta or Mal would walk the two of them back and forth, but as the two of them got older they begged to make the walk alone. The two women compromised with the boys on the condition that they each took a special item each time they walked alone to each other's house. Mal gave Bryce a pocket watch, but Ulysses received something much more inconspicuous, a tie bar. It wasn’t until Ulysses was about eleven when he first encountered a problem in his walks. One day he got a little too distracted and wandered off of his regular route. A strange-looking bird caught his eye and decided to follow it to see if there were more. His father loved to note strange fauna he encountered so Ulysses just wandered to see if he could find anything more exciting about it for his father. Without realizing it, Ulysses ended up at a park with not many people around. He had followed the bird into a small clearing blocked off by a walking trail and some trees. He was amazed to see an entire flock of the birds being completely ignored by all the other animals in the park. Ulysses was so distracted that he failed to realize the birds had all turned to stare at him in unison. As Ulysses turned back down the path from the clearing, the birds all took flight with their beaks and talons at the ready. Ulysses heard their wings in the air but didn’t bother to pay attention until the first one nose-dived at the poor boy leaving a scratch across his cheek. He yelped in pain but he was too far away for anyone to notice and Ulysses realized just how alone he really was. Another one of the birds swooped down and cut the back of Ulysses’ calf. Just before a third one could come down and attack him, Ulysses finally remembered about the tie bar Henrietta gave him. With nothing but instinct, he reached into his pocket for the small bronze bar and watched in amazement as it turned into a heavy old looking trumpet. Ulysses put the mouthpiece to his lips and blew into it as loudly as he could. The noise was loud enough to confuse the birds just long enough for Ulysses to make it out of the park and into safety. Without any thought, he just made his way to Mal and Bryce’s apartment where he knew he would be safe from anything else. Mal took care of Ulysses as best as she could, but from then on everything changed about Ulysses’ safety. Henrietta and Mal agreed that it was time to make sure both of the boys knew who they really were and how to best take care of them. Even Ernest joined in with what he had learned here and there from the note, Clio left. As Ulysses and Bryce got older, their friendship got stronger but also took on different forms. In high school, they joined different extracurriculars and only had a few shared classes. That didn’t stop the two of them from trying to spend time with each other as much as they could outside of school. Part of it for safety in numbers, but another part of it was something more. Ulysses came out the second he understood that he liked boys, and a lot of that had to do with Bryce himself. Mal was actually the first person Ulysses told, and she supported him from the beginning. As the years went on there were moments Ulysses thought that Bryce felt the same way, but he was never sure. Bryce was never the best with emotions, but his stoicism was just part of the charm for Ulysses. By the time Ulysses couldn’t handle the what if any longer, Bryce had moved to Camp Half-Blood. Ulysses knew the move was coming, Mal even tried to get Ulysses to come with them, but Ulysses couldn’t leave his father so he watched as two of the closest people in his life moved away. It wasn’t until Ulysses was nearly eighteen that he moved to camp under tragic circumstances. Ernest, Ulysses, and Henrietta went on a hike and picnic to celebrate Ulysses’ graduation. The three of them went to their favorite lunch spot at a secluded overlook that not many people knew about. Unfortunately, Henrietta and Ulysses failed to notice that a colony of myrmekes had made their new home under the hiking trails. As the three of them were enjoying their lunch, a group of the monsters followed the scent of the two demigods and attacked them. Ernest stayed back towards the edge of the overlook, while Henrietta and Ulysses tried their best to scare the myrmekes away. Everything seemed to be going fine until one of the myrmekes sprayed acids around the ledge Ernest was hiding on. Henrietta finished killing the monsters as Ulysses ran to help his father but it was too late. The wood holding up the overlook began to break off into the gorge below with Ernest in tow. The next few weeks were a blur for Ulysses. Between the funeral, all the condolences, and Henrietta deciding it was time for them to leave Charleston for a new start, Ulysses realized he was going to end up at Camp Half-Blood just like Bryce. Hopefully, he would be safe from any more danger.
