One night I got up to go to the bathroom, and I heard this little rustling sound coming from the girls' room. So I stepped inside to take a look, and the room was totally dark, not even the night light was on, and Mel was awake, in the corner of the room, dancing. It was so dark, I don't know how she could see; I could only see because of the light from the nightlight in the hallway. And she was so quite; I could hear her ballet shoes on the wooden floor, but it was pretty quiet, considering. Phoebe was sound asleep — she couldn't have known. Mel just gave me this sad, scared look, then slipped off her slippers and crawled into bed. I didn't know what to do or say, so I said nothing and quietly closed the door. Mel's always so quiet, I couldn't really tell, but I think I heard her crying as I left. I heard nothing for months. Then, maybe 5 months later, the night after they got a lock on their door at Phoebe's request, I heard it again. The sound of slippers against the floor.
